State has no money, cuts 3,000 IIIT seats

In a major blow to students from rural areas, the state government on Thursday decided to reduce the intake into IIITs by half citing infrastructure constrains.

Against yearly admissions of 6,000 students over the last two years, the government will now allow only 3,000 students. The IIITs, the brainchild of YSR, are located in Basar, Idupulapaya, where YSR gave away his land to set up the institute, and Nuzividu.

As much as 80 per cent seats are reserved for students from rural areas in these technical institutes run under the aegis of Prof.Raji Reddy.

Land misuse has AP rethink sops to firms

Instances of companies misusing or under-utilising huge tracts of land received from the government have got agencies like the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation rethinking on allotments.

Software giant Infosys has been talking of developing nine lakes on its 450acre campus at Pocharam in the city outskirts rather than making use of the land for a specific purpose.

Bramhani Infotech, promoted by the Navbharat has not raised a single structure on the 250-acre IT SEZ near the Shamshabad international airport even after three years since allotment.

Days after he “outed” details of the Kochi bid for an IPL team to join the lucrative league from 2010, leading to the resignation of the minister of state for external affairs, Mr Shashi Tharoor, the fallout now threatens to consume the IPL commissioner.

On Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president, Mr Shashank Manohar, met the Union agriculture minister, Mr Sharad Pawar — who has so far backed Mr Modi and the Opposition leader.

Mumbai stadium is not safe either

It appears that even the D.Y. Patil Stadium, which is to host the two IPL semi-finals on Wednesday and Thursday, is not very safe either.

The Union home ministry has issued a warning to the IPL that security arrangements at the stadium are not up to the mark, according to a report.

The matches were shifted to Navi Mumbai following two low-intensity explosions at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, and the recovery of three bombs.

Tharoor quits over IPL franchise row

Controversia minister of state for external affairs, Mr Shashi Tharoor, is understood to have submitted his resignation to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Sunday. This has been accepted, and forwarded to the President, Ms Pratibha Patil. An official announcement is expected later in the night or Monday.

The Prime Minister summoned Mr Tharoor late Sunday night for the second of two meetings in the day at 7 Race Course Road, where the minister was told to put in his papers.

Earlier, a consensus emerged at a meeting of the Congress core group that Mr Tharoor's continuance in the wake of his involvement in the IPL Kochi team controversy was damaging both the government and the Congress, and that he should be asked to go.

Moon mission may be delayed

The crash of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle GSLV-D3 into the Bay of Bengal will set the clock back by a couple of years on ambitious projects such as the human journey into deep space and the country’s second shot at the Moon.

This evening, the rocket veered off course and crashed into the choppy sea because of a snag in the indigenous cryogenic engine, according to Indian space scientists.

The vehicle lifted off as planned at 4:27 pm after a smooth countdown. The performance was normal up to the end of second stage (about five minutes into the flight).

Country's GeoSynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle launch today

The scientists of the Isro seemed to have chosen an astrologically auspicious time for the launch of the country’s first indigenous GeoSynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle on Thursday.

Rahu, Gulika and Yama Kandaka, the three inauspicious phases of the day, will be over by 3 pm and the GSLV will blast off from the Satish Dhavan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the country’s space port, at 4.27 pm.

Scientists of the Liquid Propulsion System Centre who developed the cryogenic engine are confident about the success of the mission but apparently they don’t want to take chances with other cosmic forces either.

6 cops indicted for Osmania University violence

The Crime Investigation Department that probed the alleged police excesses on journalists and students in the Osmania University campus during the recent proTelangana agitation, has found fault with six police officers, including an assistant commissioner of police.

The state government had ordered the CID probe following all-round condemnation of the brutal way in which the police unleashed violence on the agitating students and the journalists covering the developments.

Vehicles and cameras were damaged in the attack.

United States heat on Gilani

The US President, Mr Barack Obama, has asked the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr Yousuf Raza Gilani, to take stern and decisive action against those involved in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, a move that could be construed as an improvement in New Delhi's bonding with Washington.

The US President met Mr Gilani and the Pakistan foreign minister, Mr Shah Mehmood Qureshi, hours after his talks with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, on Sunday.

During his meeting with Mr Obama, Dr Singh had expressed concern about activities in Pakistan. Dr Singh told the US President that Pakistan "lacked the will to punish" those responsible for the Mumbai terror attacks, the foreign secretary, Ms Nirupama Rao, said.

Rajya Sabha has 100 crorepatis

About 100 Rajya Sabha members have declared their assets worth more than Rs 1 crore with independent Parliamentarian from Maharashtra, Mr Rahul Bajaj being the richest.

According to an analysis by an NGO, Mr Bajaj has declared his movable and immovable assets worth over Rs 300 crore followed by Janta Dal (Secular) MP, Mr M.A.M. Ramaswamy (Karnataka) and Mr T. Subramani Reddy of Congress (Andhra Pradesh) who have declared assets of more than Rs 278 crore and Rs 272 crore respectively.

Sania decision wise: Poll

Despite all the over Pakistan controversy over Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik's first marriage, a majority of Hyderabadis feel that tennis star Sania Mirza's decision to tie the knot with him was "wise and wellthought-out", driven of course by love, according to a survey by Outlook.

The majority also said Sania should play for India after marriage. But they also feel that Sania would have been happier with Sohrab Mirza, her childhood friend.

According to a survey on the Sania-Shoaib marriage conducted by Marketing and Development Research Associates for Outlook, 43.8 per cent of the respondents in Hyderabad and Secunderabad felt that the tennis star has taken a wise decision.

Shoaib divorces Ayesha

What reportedly started off with one telephone call ended with another on Wednesday. After denying his `telephonic' marriage to city girl Ayesha Siddiqui for more than two years, a desperate Shoaib Malik did a U-turn and divorced her.

It is learnt that after the compromise was worked out, Shoaib, who was staying at Sania's residence, called Ayesha and pronounced `talaq' thrice over the telephone.

This clears the way for Shoaib to go ahead with his marriage with tennis star Sania Mirza scheduled on April 15.

China hacks into defence systems

Turning the tables on a China-based computer espionage gang, Canadian and United States computer security researchers have monitored a spying operation for eight months, observing while the intruders pilfered classified and restricted documents from the highest levels of India’s defence ministry.

In a report on Monday, the researchers, based at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, provide an account of how a spy operation it called the Shadow Network hacked into computers in government offices on several continents.

Mamata backs Yadavs on quota within quota

The Trinamul Congress chief and railway minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, on Monday once again joined hands with the Yadav troika of Mulayam, Lalu and Sharad in blocking the Women Reservation Bill in its present form during the all-party meeting.

She had made her stand clear on the issue when the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha during the first part of the Budget session, as she favoured a sub-quota for Muslims within the 33 per cent quota for women.

A key ally of the Congress-led ruling UPA, the TMC favoured “consensus” over the legislation before the bill is brought to Lok Sabha for its passage.

Sania will play for India: Shoaib

Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik finally broke his silence on Sunday and said his earlier marriage to Ayesha Siddiqui was “illegal”. He also said that after marriage Sania Mirza would continue playing tennis for India.

Speaking to reporters outside Sania’s Banjara Hills residence, Malik made it clear that his marriage with Sania would be held on April 15 in Hyderabad as scheduled. He also distributed a press statement which said that the nikahnama with Ayesha was illegal as it was done over phone and that he had been pressurised into it.

Sania, Shoaib to settle in Dubai after wedding

India's ace tennis player, Sania Mirza is to marry Shoaib Malik, the former cricket captain of Pakistan. The wedding has been scheduled within a month.

“The couple will be based in Dubai, where Shoaib is a resident and Sania will continue to play tennis once she recovers fully from the serious wrist injury,” Sania’s father, Mr Imran Mirza, told this newspaper on Monday.

Sania is understandably excited about her marriage. “My wedding is, Inshallah, going to be the biggest day of my life,” the 23-year-old said.

25 hurt in city clashes

Around 25 peo ple were injured in different parts of Hyderabad on Sunday as people belonging to two groups clashed, attacking each other with knives and stones.

The trouble started late on Saturday night over putting up flags at a locality near Moosa Bowli. While people of one group were setting up the flags, another group objected to it. The disagreement soon led to violence. Police dispersed the warring groups but the violence soon spread to Charminar, Hussainialam, Chatrinaka, Gowliguda, Begum Bazaar and Siddiamber Bazaar.

4 Percent Muslim okay: Supreme Court

In a major victory to the Andhra Pradesh government, the Supreme Court on Thursday permitted it to continue with four per cent reservation for 14 backward groups among Muslims for the time being.

While revoking the AP High Court's stay on the quota, the bench consisting of the Chief Justice, K.G. Balakrishnan, and Justices J.M. Panchal and B.S. Chauhan referred the case to a Constitution bench that will assemble in second week of August to take up the matter.

World's hottest chilli is Army's latest weapon

The military has a new weapon against terrorism: the world’s hottest chilli.

After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized “bhut jolokia,” or “ghost chili,” to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilise suspects, defence officials said on Tuesday.

The bhut jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world’s spiciest chilli.

Teachers join students to cheat in SSC exams

It was a field day for malpractices in Board exams on Monday as the number of cases booked against students crossed 100 in both Intermediate (112 cases) and SSC (101 cases) exams.

Shockingly, teachers who were appointed as invigilators vied with the students in resorting to malpractice: 63 invigilators, two chief superintendents and an assistant commissioner of exams were suspended.

Crude bomb found on Kingfisher plane

In the most serious security lapse at an Indian airport in several years, a crude explosive found its way into the cargo hold of a Kingfisher aircraft that flew from Bengaluru International Airport to Thiruvananthapuram Sunday morning.

The “bomb”, a round metal object the size of a cricket ball and filled with some 15-20 gm of gunpowder, was found when cleaning staff went into the cargo hold minutes after all 27 passengers that had flown on the aircraft had deplaned at Thiruvananthapuram airport. Security staff then moved the aircraft to an isolated bay and checked it thoroughly.

State approval a must for technical colleges

The state government will have the final say in granting approvals for the setting up of new technical education colleges from this year. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has made a “no objection certificate” (NOC), issued by the state government, mandatory to set up new engineering, pharmacy, MBA, MCA and M. Tech colleges.

Unless the state government issues the NOC, the AICTE will not process the applications to set up new colleges this year.
