1.6 lakh singers set record

A staggering 1.6 lakh musicians sang Annamacharya keertanas in praise of lord Venkateswara in the city on Sunday, setting a new world record.

The official adjudicator of Guinness Records, Mr Reymond Marshal, announced to huge applause that the event, Laksha Gala Sankeertanarchana, had broken the previous record of Poland where 60,000 people sang the national anthem together on August 2, 1937.

“In all 1.6 lakh people participated in the event. The previous record has been broken,” Mr Marshal said.

He handed over the certificate to the finance minister, Mr K. Rosaiah.

The event was organised to pay tribute to the poet Tallapaka Annamacharya on his 601st birth anniversary.

Renigunta airport cleared

The Centre’s decision to develop Renigunta airport at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore will boost religious tourism and develop Rayalaseema region.

Thousands of devotees from the United States, Britain and other parts of the world visit Tirupati every year for the darshan of Lord Venkateswara.

At present, they are put to hardship because of the lack of connectivity and have to catch connecting flights from Chennai, Mumbai or Hyderabad to reach Tirupati. The frequency of flights will increase once the airport is modernised and the runway is extended to 11,000 feet from 7,500 feet. The airport will also be expanded to accommodate at least 700 passengers at once. Night landing facility is already present.
